My name is Marco, and I'm a sweet little Shih Tzu/Poodle mix puppy who just came out of a shelter with my brother Polo. We are about 6-7 weeks old and were loaded with worms and fleas. Thanks to SBRET we are still alive although it has been a rough road for us. Each of us is a little under 2 lbs. but the shelter neutered us, even though we were awfully small and young. Animal shelter's work so hard to try to stop animal overpopulation and their policy of not releasing animals unless they have been altered is a very good one but, in our case, it was hard because we were pretty fragile to begin with. I had to spend my first night of being rescued at the weekend emergency vet clinic (we are just like human children in that bad things seem to happen on evenings or weekends). I would not wake up from my surgery and had gone into shock. The emergency vet kept me overnight and saved my life but it was very expensive. Then we both got very listless and wouldn't eat so my foster mom took us to our SBRET vet where she gave us fluids and a special tube of food with lots of calories and vitamins, yum! We are really perking up and everyone thinks we have turned the corner and will be just fine. Neither of us will be available for adoption until sometime in July since SBRET wants to be sure we did not pick up anything yucky at the shelter, plus we want to be very good and healthy. I don't think I've mentioned that we are both exceptionally sweet and LOVE to be held. SBRET has a lot of special needs dogs right now and, as you might not be aware, the adoption fee almost never covers the expenses they have incurred in vet care. That will be the case with us as well so we sure would like you to consider donating some money for our care - any amount would be really appreciated. When SBRET agrees to rescue a dog they also are agreeing to do everything possible to be sure we are as healthy as possible before we are adopted. If you would like to make a donation to help with our medical expenses, we'd sure like that!
7/2/09 update: I am now ready for a forever home! My brother and I were pretty fragile for a while but we are now very healthy and happy pups. I am a super friendly, sweet, loving little guy, very much like my brother Polo. I have a white tip on my tail which is how my mom can tell us apart. We both love to be held but want to run around and explore too. Soon I am going to need some chew toys and learn all about house training. I have a big stuffed Moose that I like to sleep with - he is much bigger than I am but I love to use him as a pillow and to snuggle against. No one knows for sure how big I will be when I am full grown but the guess is under 10 lbs. For that reason and, because I am such a tiny pup, I can't go to a family with young children. I love everyone right now and that is because my family knows how to handle me very gently; young kids often don't understand how easily I could be hurt. I am a such a sweet little guy I know I will melt your heart. If you have the time to work with a little pup and be willing to teach me all about having good house manners, I promise to make you a wonderful companion. My adoption fee will be $200, and my forever family will be required to complete my puppy shots. Be sure to check out my new picture! 7/24/09 update: My foster mom calls us her "Butterball Boys" because we are so nice and fat and happy - just like puppies ought to be! We are now 12 weeks old and my foster mom's family adores both of us. They are all really picky about the kind of home we are going to get to go to because they think we are such perfect little pups. You see, we are fun, playful, adorable, sweet - you get the message. We would love to be adopted together as we have such a good time playing and sleeping together, plus pups need someone to play with. If you can't adopt both of us, we would really like to go to a home that has another dog we could play with. We are working on our house manners but don't have the hang of the "pottying outside all the time" thing but we love to do our "business" outside, it is just a timing thing with our mom (that means it is HER fault because she doesn't time it right to get us outside!). We do so love going outside and playing under bushes and among her tall plants. She says we have camouflage coloring so you have to really watch us or you will lose sight of us. For that reason and because we love exploring outside, we would love to go to a home with a fence. Mom hasn't worked on leash walking yet with us, we are still pretty little. Speaking of little, brother Marco is 3.7 lbs. and brother Polo is 4.1 lbs. Mom tells everyone who asks that there are no guarantees as to how big we will ultimately become or even our breed combination although the best guess is still under 10 lbs. and Shih Tzu/Poodle. Bottom line - we are guaranteed to be cute and to be very original in our looks! If you have time to work with very sweet natured boys, the joy that you will receive will be tremendous. We are two very special pup companions.
